During their career, your character will pick up various personal items that can help (or hinder) them in their actions.

Characters in the game have an unlimited inventory, but they can only have 6 items equipped at any time.

The Item Views

The merchant view is where you buy and sell the items you acquire. You will find similar views under your character status (personal items) and when plundering opponents after personal combat.

All of these views are organized in a similar fashion with a header showing your personal wealth and a list of the personal items available.

The information about the items is organized as follows. At the top is the name of the item; below it are a short description and an explanation of the effect the item has. On the right side of the view is a button that allows you to perform an action with the item; either to buy, sell, equip or unequip the item in question.

Item Classes

Items are divided into a number of usage types; with the exception of off-hand weapons, a character can never have more than one item of a type equipped at the same time.

  • Head Gear: Hats and helmets. Useful to protect against strikes to the head or as a fashion statement.
  • Body Wear: Coats, cloaks and armor. Useful to protect against strikes at the body or as a fashion statement.
  • Hand Wear: Gloves and bracers. Useful to protect against strikes at the arms/hands or as a fashion statement.
  • Leg Wear: Boots and shinguards. Useful to protect against strikes at the legs/feet or as a fashion statement.
  • Weapon: The weapon used for strikes in close combat. Weapons are either fencing based (swords and some daggers) or brawling based.
  • Off Hand Item: Items held in the character's weak hand during combat. This can be a secondary weapon like a dagger or buckler.
  • Missile: Missile weapon, usually kept around the body to be used once during a combat. A typical item of this type is a flintlock pistol.
  • Accessory: All other types of items..

Usage

Items that have a personal effect are only usable while they are equipped. Items that have a general effect (e.g., a compass) such as most items that are used on your ship do not need to be equipped in order to be used. It is assumed that the player character is able to retrieve the items easily at need.
